TAMFS at Creating Change

Some of us wish that we could be at Creating Change, but can’t. We’re glad that Lisa Larges will be there leading a workshop!

Creating Change

Humor, Hospitality, and Heliotropes as Tools for Social Change
Practice Spirit, Do Justice • All Audiences

In this workshop we address the nature vs. nurture debate: Are queers born with a more highly developed sense of humor, or is it an acquired characteristic? Since the anti-equality activists have co-opted tactics of fear, anger and smoldering resentment, we’ll focus on the leftovers: joy, love and hospitality. We’ll share tactics for creative social change: instant theater, flash mobs, well-placed “mocktivism,” guerilla acts of hospitality, and other stuff we haven’t thought of yet!

The Dreaded Stairs

Swedish engineers changed the behavior of 66% of people through the use of … FUN! The drudgery of climbing stairs became appealing with just a little change.

What kinds of little changes could we make in the church to create change of this magnitude?

Lisa Larges: Church Should be Fun

Really, is that too much to ask?

I’m not suggesting that that’s all church should be. Certainly church should also be a lot of other things –
like challenging, prayerful, community building, and inspirational, in the fullest sense of that word.
Maybe such things should even rank higher on the priority list than fun.

Also, sometimes church needs to be convicting, confrontive, and disturbing – words that don’t run in the
fun family.

But here’s a little shout out for fun. A pastor I know once gave a sermon while standing on top of a
ladder. As he spoke, a clown employed various stealth tactics to cause him to fall off the ladder. That’s
what you call “high risk preaching,” and I think he only did it once!

His message was about faith as a firm foundation – and see, I still remember it!

I have this dream, that one day, maybe at the General Assembly, thousands of Presbyterians will just
collectively bust out laughing so hard that they’ll need to call a recess. A girl can dream!
